Thiruvachakam  Aruliya  Manivasagam

Divine poem in Tamil

By

Anand Vasudevan  of Amritha varshini

An attempt in translation by
P.R.Ramachander

(This was a great poem written by Sri Anand Vasudevan about  Manickha  Vasagar , the great Saivite saint who    wrote the great book called  “Thiruvasagam”  . The greatness  of the book can be judged by the  popular Tamil saying  “Those who are  not moved by  Thiruvasagam, would not be moved   by  any  book whatsoever.”   AS soon   as I got the poem from Sri Anand  , I wanted to translate in to English and I did it  .Sri Anand was kind enough to go through   and correct it and permitted me to reproduce his Tamil  poem along  with my translation. My heartfelt thanks to him and I pray  God to bless him.
Manikka Vasagar  the  tamil saivite saint   who composed THiruvasagam was born in a city called Thiruvadhavoor. BY his greatness   he became the chief minister of the  Pandya king  Saundhara  Pandyan. Once when the king wanted to buy some  well-bred horses, he sent Manika Vasagar to buy them along with sufficient funds..When he reached a temple called , the temple town of Thiruperum thurai  , he was instructed by Lord  Shiva, who came there  in the form of Guru , to build a temple for him there.Manikka vasagar, spent all the money meant   for   buying horses  and built a great temple there. Lord Shiva then promised him that  he would bring the horses to Madhurai on the Avani Moolam day   .When Manikka Vasagar told the king  that the horses would be brought soon, the king was pleased.  But when they did not arrive for a long time, the king got  Manikka vasagar arrested   and put him in jail..Next day Lord Shiva  took the form of  a horse merchant and  transformed several foxes in to horses and delivered  them to the king. But after  he left that night  all the horses  turned  back in to foxes, Though the king tortured Manikka Vasagar  , the god  played more divine sports with the king made him realize   his mistake.(A detailed story about this saint can be read in  http://www.shaivam.org/admanika.htm )

Those who come and worship here will not be in the mother’s womb in the next janma/birth is the belief

"क्षमा"/"Kshama" to Indrajeeth (Ravana’s son)
Meganaathan was the son of Ravana

Once, Indrajeeth was flying in his pushpaka vimaana across the sky
Suddenly the flight of the vimaana was impeded
When he looked down he understood that he was flying over Lord Shiva’s temple and so this impediment had happened to him
Indrajeeth worshipped the LORD after taking bath in the sacred theertham
He also tried to shift this wonderful Linga to Sri Lanka
But he could not and fell unconscious in the process
Ravana came to know about this incident
He surrendered to the Lord’s feet, pleaded to Him to pardon his son and bestow blessings on him
Lord Shiva is said to have forgiven Indrajeeth
Hence Lord Shiva is known here as Aparaadha Kshameswarar in sanskrit and is referred as Kutram-poruththa Naathar in Tamil

Happy Republic day- Lets look back

Happy republic day to all of you. I am giving below the translation of a Gujarathi prayer very dear to Mahathma Gandhi’s heart, Narsi Mehta tells us who is the man of God .If only this is read by every Indian and followed, all the problems of our country would completely vanish.

Vaioshnava Janato
(The man of God)
By
Narasi Mehta

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

One of the greatest Gujarati poet-saints, Narsi Mehta introduced philosophical poetry into the bhakti world of Gujarat. He composed about 740 songs. 'Vaishnava-janato', the prayer song popularized by Mahatma Gandhi, is a composition of Narsi Mehta’s. This soul stirring poetry moves any theist. I have taken the liberty of translating this poem by substituting “Man of God” instead of “Vaishnava”. I did this because I felt that, what the poet must have meant was that.

English translation

He and he alone is the man of God,
Who knows the pain and misery of others,
Who tries to help others in distress,
And who does not have pride in his mind.

He and he alone is the man of God,
Who respects and salutes all,
Who does not talk ill of others,
Who keeps his mind pure in words and action,
And whose mother is considered blessed by all.

He and he alone is the man of God,
Who views everybody as equal,
Who considers other women as his mother,
Who never tells lies all his life,
And who never yearns for other’s wealth.

He and he alone is the man of God,
Who never has any attachments,
Who is strongly detached to worldly pleasures,
Who is addicted to remembering his God,
And in whose mind are all the holy places of the world.

He and he alone is the man of God,
Who has no greed and deceit in his mind,
Who has forsaken all pleasures and anger,
And whose sight is thirsted for by Narasi the poet,
For the entire family gets salvation on seeing him.
