Today  happens to be our 51st   anniversary(13-7-2021)

By

P.R.Ramachander

WE both  look back  to the three legged race  called  married life , offering pranams  to all elders, blessings  and love  to those  t younger to us

After  being  tied together ,

We started  running  together

In the  year  that  was  1970,

In the three legged  race of married life

Slowly  two more   children  ,

Climbed  on our shoulders,

Which slowed   down a lot ,

Because  it was a three legged race

We passed  twenty  five mile stones

And those children who almost earned nothing ,

Gave  some  wonderful presents for  us,

Which made  us shed  tones of  tears of joy

The children developed  wings   and flew away,

We  started celebrating  second homey moon

With no one  near  us   for miles  together,

When we  reached last year the  fiftieth  stone

We were  happy   for  that  wonderful   three legged race,

But knew  that the  race  will be three  legged would be

More loney  due to carona , more  slow   due to fear of infection,

And today panting and smiling  we have reached  our  fifty first  mile stone

Gods , ancient sages and marriage

Gods  , ancient sages   and marriage

By

P.R.Ramachander

All the gods  of india   are married

Lord  Ganesa  appears  with his wives(sidhi and Budhi) in many temples

Lord Ayyappa in many places in Tamil nadu is married to his wives  Poornaand Pushkala

Lord Karthikeya  of North has  two wives  in south

And even  Lord Hanuman is believed  to have a wife   called  Suvarchala

All the ancient sages   except   a few   are married

Saint Sanaka, sanathkumara  , Parasurama and Narada  are  the famous  unmarried sages

To my knowledge   all the ancient sages  including saptha  rishis  are married

It seems  Sage Sukha  son of Veda  vyasa did not want  to marry but  Veda vyasa  sent him to king Janaka

Who advised   and made  him marry

Possibly  Large  number  of never married  sages  started  appearing  in India  perhaps  after  Adhi Sankara.Even in his case   there is a story that  wife  of mandana mishra , asked him questions  on marred life and he entered the body of dead king and learnt  what marriage is

Many of the sri vaishnavite  sages    were married and few  of madhwa  saints also

This shows   the importance a Hindu attached to  married life

Chevvai dosham or Manglik

Chevvai  dosham or  Manglik

By

P.R.Ramachander

( many people   with marriageable  groom and bride  are exploited due to Chevvai dosham .No prayer and no worship will  change  the horoscope .)

1.For  Boys

The 7th house from Lagna and/or Chandra in case of boy   determines, his health , future and most importantly marriage, In his case the 8th house  does not have  any thing to do marriage, Chevvai/kuja/mangal  in this house is called  chevvai   dosham or manglik <this is supposed   to bring down life of his wife

(chevvai in mesham, kadakam, vruschigam  and makaram does not do cause chevvai dosham Please also know that Guru  with chevai or Guru having drishti on chevvai from 7th house takes away Chevvai dosham.)

Please remember  the counting has to start with lagnam or mon’s place  as number 1 and goes clock wise and always in Rasi  Chakra

2.For girls

The 7th house from lagna or Chandra in case  of girl determines her married life  as well as happiness ,The eigth house in her case  determines   the life span of her husband. So chevvai in 7th or 8th house  causes chevvai dosham for girls (chevvai in mesham, kadakam, vruschigam  and makaram does not do cause chevvai dosham),,If there is chevvai dosham  for girls it is supposed  to bring down life  span of her husband

It is believed that  if both husband and wife  have chevvai dosham, both of them are not affected and lead a  happy life

Since 7th as well as 8th house  causes  chevvai dosham for girls, the number of girls  with chevvai dosham would be double  that of boys and such girls   would find it extremely  difficult  to get matching horoscopes

To my knowledge no prayer  takes  away  chevvai dosham but the strength of effect is reduced. Many people believe ,   if dosham person marries a banana tree  and it is cut off , the chevvai dosham is nullified because , the first  husband is dead.

The people  with chevvai dosham are  called  Mangliks in north .

Suppose   there is a love marriage  and you know one of them has Chevvai dosham, I always advise them to tear off their horoscope,. Because to every one in the world there will be problem and , if they show  their horoscopes to astrologers, they will make their life miserable

Aim perum Kaappiyankal (The five big tamil epics)

Aim perum  Kaappiyankal (The five big  tamil epics)

Compiled  in a very summarized   fashion  by

P.R.Ramachander

( It is believed  that the names  of these  five epics are  based on women’s ornaments of those  days-

Chilappathikaram-  Chilambu   anklet

Mani mekhalai-  Waist belt

Kundala kesi -  ear globe

Valayapathi-  bangles

Cheevake chinthamani(The gem on crown)

Except Sipaathikaram    all of them give in detail the  principles  of Budhism  and Jainism.Only Silappathikaram   and Mani mekhalai     are well preserved, and only a part of the book is available as of now

I have  studied tamil in school and   have come across   the story of Silappathikaram and did not have an inkling about  what  the four books  are about, Based on my  online search  I am giving small  summary of  these epics as   I understood them)

1.Silappadhikaram

(The book is a poem of more  than 5000 lines)

Kovalan married  Kannaki and they lived happily,

Later  Kovalan fell  in love with madhavi the courtesan

Kannaki  was heart broken and  in a singing  competition,

When Madhavi sang about  a vacillating lover, Kovalan leaves her

Kannak i and Kovalan join together  and go to Madurai,

And Kannagi encourages Kovalan to rebuild   their shattered life

She gives him  one of her anklets   to sell  in the market,

But this anklet unfortunately  resembled that of queen’s stolen anklet

The gold smith reported   Kovalan   and he was hung to death,

Kannaki rushed  to the queen and broke  her  remaining anklet,

And proved  to the  queen that , it was  different from that of hers,

The king realized his mistake and died  and so does  the queen

Kanaki’s anger burst  and she burnt   the city  of Madurai,

And goes from there  to Chera nadu(kerala)  and dies   and goes to heaven,

And the  Chera king  , builds a huge temple   for her,

By  bringing a stone  from Himalayas and she  is worshipped there.

Chilappathikaram tells   story  of Kovalan, his wife Kannaki

And his lover  the courtesan Madhavi . Kovalan deserts  Madhavi,

And unjustly killed by a Pandya king and Kannaki  ,

Condemns  the king, burns  his capital   and goes to kerala,

2.Mani Mekalai

(Mani mekalai  is the daughter of Madhavi  the courtesan and Kovalan. . At the end of the story  Manimekalai goes  to preach Budhism . This book  has 4861  lines  and is well  preserved.)

Madhavi turned  in to a Buddhist nun and her    daughter ,

Manimekalai  , the very pretty girl   also became  a budhist

But the prince of the kingdom  Udhayakumara  falls in love with her,

And the goddess  of ocean Manimekalai  cast   a spell on  Manimekalai.

She then took   her  to an island Manipallavam    and left  her  there,

She also gave  her hope  to live in that island     as a Buddhist

The goddess  sends a message to Madhavi   through  a close friend

And told her  that Manimekalai   will come back and is destined to be an ascetic

In the island her  destiny was  revealed  to Manimekhalai  by the Budhist pedestal              ,

And she also gets a magic pot which will get filled    up    at her command

The chola prince who was  pursuing her  gets killed by accident,

And when Manimekalai   returns she   was put in prison by his mother

Her Guru Aravana  adikal advised her to wander  all over the world,

Feeding poor people   and learning more about    all religions

Manimekalai is taught to take any disguise   she wants

And reaches the kerala town of Vanchi(Kodungallore)   and took form  of a man

After learning about all relegions in Vanchi  , She decided  none of them,

Provided for proper   solution of life, She learnt   all the Buddhist   teachings ,

Of how suffering would lead  to freedom of desires, through detachment

And she lived  in the monastery , following   the  Buddhist Dharma

Kundala kesi (Kundala is  ear gobe and Kunthala means pretty curved long hair)

(Only a small part of this book survived)

There   was girl named  bhadra  but called

Kundala kesi*Possibly kunthala)  because she had long   curly hair

She lost her mother at very young    age  ,

And was brought up   by  her  very rich father

One day she saw a criminal called “Kala” being lead to gallows,

She   fell  in love with him and her  rich father  after giving,

Weight for weight gold   got  him    released  and

Kundala kesi    got     married to him

“Kala’ the criminal was   only after  money ,

And one   day he took her to a steep mountain top,

And when he was  about to push her down ,

She  wanted  to go round him  before death,

And while behind  , she pushes  him to his death

And she becomes  a budhist  nun

Valayaa  Pathi

(This book is almost lost. This is  what the  available fragments indicate)

There was a rich  merchant with two wives,

He abandoned  one of them and sent her away

In the new land  , that lady   gave  birth to a boy,

Who was called Valaya pathi

When the boy grew up , other  children

Started   teasing  him  saying he was fatherless

Then he cried   and requested  his mother,

And she told   the name and place of his father

When he traced that person   and told  him,

That he was his father , he refused  to acknowledge,

Then with aid of  goddess he got  his  mother there

And merchant acknowledges and makes him a merchant

Civaka   chithamani

(This  book is well preserved  and has 3145 quartrains)

There was a king who was over thrown in a coup

The king allowed  the pregnant   queen  to escape

Later  the queen gave  up this world  became an ascetic,

But she gave  her son who is born  to a trusted   servant

That boy not only   grew  up in to  a man

But a superman excelling  in all skills  ,

He   exceled in war ,  regained  his kingdom , defeated  all kings,

And makes  all women he met   to fal  for him

He regained   the kingdom that  his father lost,

Became   a great king , married  very many girls

And after   enjoying   his love  life  to the hilt,

He later  gives up this world  and becomes an ascetic

A small compilation of Palakkad iyer contributors to Carnatic music

A small  compilation of   Palakkad  iyer  contributors  to Carnatic music

(This collection was  done   some 20  years back  and since I do not belong to field of music, there may be very many omissions .Please excuse  me  for short comings and suggest   whom I should include)

The three major centers of development of Carnatic Music in South India are the Tanjore District of Tamil Nadu, the areas surrounding Mysore state, and Kerala. The major part of the development of music in Kerala is due to the Kerala Iyers. This may be due to the possible fact that most of the Kerala Iyers trace their origin to Tanjore district. Some of the great musicians among Kerala Iyers are:-

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar who has been called the Gana Gandharvan of Kerala. It was this great musician who gave a fillip to Singing of Malayalam songs in concerts. He has a very large disciple following including the famous Jesudas.

Palakkad Mani Iyer, understandably an emperor of percussion instrument called Mridangam. His amazing mastery used to dumbfound connoisseurs.

Nurani Parameswara Bhagavathar who lived in the 19th century who was with Swati Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore.

Thondikkulam Anantharama Bhagavathar who was an acknowledged exponent of Harikatha style of music.

Mundai Rama Bhagavathar who was an acknowledged leader in pure classical music.

Parur Sundram Iyer and his sons M.S.Gopala Krishnan, M.S.Anantharaman and daughter M.S. Rajam. This school of violin music is considered by many as the innovators in mixing Hindustani and Carnatic Music. They were possibly the forerunners of the modern day Jugalbandhi.

Palakkad Narayanaswamy possibly the greats musician of musicians.

Palakkad K.V.Gopalakrishnan known for his mastery of Mridangam and Vocal style of music .He also delved in to Hindustani classical music.

M.D.Ramanathan was known for his pure rendering of the classical style of Carnatic Music. He was the well-known teacher of music in Kalakshetra of Madras.

Bombay sisters who used to thrall their listeners by mellifluous rendering of famous Kritis and Slokas.

Sri.M.A.Kalyanakrishna Bhagavathar who was well known for his rendering of classical music and his son

Sri.M.K.Kalyanakrishna Bhagavatar who was known for his proficiency on Veena

Gurvayur Dorai and Palakkad Raghu both well known for their proficiency in Mridangam

Ayilur Krishnan, Chalakudy Narayanaswamy and Puducode Krishnamurthy well known vocalists.

Sri.T.N.Krishnan who is a great player on violin

Trichur Ramachandran one of the present day Greats in music.

One of the other ancient great contributors to the music was Ennapadam Venkatrama Bhagavathar.

Sri.Thiruvarpu Krishna Bhagavathar (1860-1945) was considered as a great authority in singing                        Muthuswami Iyer Kritis.

Sri. T.V. Gopalakrishnan (Very famous Mridangist and Vocalist) and his brother Sri. T.V. Vasan (Ghatam vidhwan) - both belong to Tripunithura.

Sri. V.V. Subramaniam and his brother Sri. V.V. Ravi (famous Violin Vidhwans), Wadakkancheri

Kunisseri Sri. Mani Iyer (Mridanga Vidwan)

Late Sri. Thiruvilmalai Kondhai (the only Iyer to play leading role in Chandamelam and Guru of Stalwart, Pallavoor Appu Marar)

Another great in his own right is Mr.Dakshinamurthy who attained lot of fame as music Director in Malayalam and Tamil films.

Late  Parassala  ponnama  was  another  of those  greats

The Gazal singer Hariharan, the great  Shankar  Mahadevan , the light music queen Mrs.Usha Uthup and Smt Anuradha Sriram , Bombay Jayashree and present light music mastero Manohar Iyer also belong to the group of Kerala Iyers.
