A survey of Gothras
among iyers (Tamil Speaking
Brahmins)
Complied by
P.R.Ramachander
Gothras among Brahmins is supposed to be patrilineal groups among them. They are believed to have originated
from the Gothra rishi. I wanted
to know how the gothras are spread among
Tamil speaking iyers and
undertook this survey. As a part of arm chair research I went through several
issues of Sruthivani and Mukthipriya
magazines which give matrimonial advertisements of Iyers. From them using
the data of 3507 advertisements,
I could find that , they belong to 51 Gothras(
There may be many more Gothras, which has not come in my survey.

I guess Radheethara & Ratheethra are the same I belong to this. I think its just a variation of the spelling
This is very extensive...what a great research to undertake in your 70s. Your work inspires me!
im also from radheethara gothram
im also from radheethara gothram
im from this same gothram
My Gothram is Koundinya. Before marriage my Mother's (i.e. my maternal grandfather's)Gothram was Sikitha Gothram. Sikitha Gothram indeed is a very rare Gothram - which is also proving right in just 1 out ur sample of 3507 belonging to that.
Do you know who else are from Sikitha. My gothram was sikitha before marriage my grand father hailing from melappavoor, Tenkasi. Would like to connect with other Sikitha gothram members
What about Jamatagni - no such persons from them - is it so so rare?
Mine is kutsasa gothram ....
