A king met Sage Avvayar , the poetess and asked   for four crores ,

She said:-

The courtyard  of those  who do not respect  you.

By chance. ,  not going  and stepping on it  ,

You will  get one crore

2.Unneer , unneer yendru   upachariyaar

Tham Manayil  Unnamai kodi perum

Not taking food  in the house, where

They fondly request you, “ Please  join us for food, “

You will  get one crore

3.Kodi koduthum  kudi piranthaar

Thammodu kooduthal,Kodi perum

Having company of good and noble,

Even if we pay  one crore

You will get one crore

Even if you pay  crores and crores

Not going back on your word

You will get one crore

What is life? Which is best life

வாழ்க்கை என்றால் என்ன? உலகில் சிறந்த வாழ்க்கை எது?

What is life?   Which is best life

(I do not know who wrote it but it is quoted  very often)

1.If mother  is there , there  is no sorrow

2.If Father  is there  , there is no  worries

3.If  younger sister   is there  , then there  is no solitude

4.If Granpa   is there , there  is no hesitation

5.If Granma is there, there is no fear

6.If elder  sister is there , we will see  the  reflection of mother

7.If elder  brother is there , we  will get everything with love

8.If younger brother is there , we wll get one  more leg to support

9.If wife is there life in earth   will shine

10.If daughter is there , we will remember  our child hood

11.If son is there  , our great   clan will survive

12, we  are going to die in this soil

But we are  not going to be  born in this soil together

Living together  without parting when   we  are alive  is a boon

Family is the heaven God  made  for us in this  earth

It is in our hands

To make it  heaven or hell

Some sons were bad 5000 years back also

Some sons were bad 5000 years back also

By

P.R.Ramachander

There is a great book called “Devi Mahathmya(Called Chandi in north” which is a part of the great “Brahmanda Purana” which was compiled by sage Vyasa

The main character of the story is a king called Suradha , who is driven by his ministers,One day he saw a sad Vysya in the forest. Now read what happened

16. Thathra viprasramaabhyase Vaisyamekham dadarsa sa,

Sa prashtasthena kasthwam bho hethuschagamanethra ka.

That king saw near the sage’s hermitage a Vaisya(One who belongs to the community of business people) and asked him, “Who are you? And why have you come here?”

17. Sasoka iva kasmathwam durmana iva lakshyase.,

Ityakarnya vachasthasya bhoopathe pranayo ditham.

18. Prathyuvacha sa tham vaisya prasrayavanatho nrupam.

To the loving question by the king as to why he was sad and appeared with a disturbed mind, that Vysya with humility told the king.

19. Vaisyo Uvacha:-

Samadhirnama Vysyo Aham uthpanno dhaninam kule,

Puthra dharairnirasthascha dhanalobhada sadhubhi,

Viheenaswajanairdharai puthrairadhaya me dhanam

20. Vanambhyagadho dukhee nirasthaschapthabandhbhi.

Vaisya told:-

“I am Vysya called Samadhi, born in a rich family. Because of intense desire for money, I was robbed of all my wealth and driven out by my wives and sons who were of bad character. Thus I, without my wives sons and forsaken by my intimate friends, have arrived in this forest with intense sorrow. ”

21. Pravruthim swajanacha dharanam chaathra samsthitha,

Kim nu thesham gruhe, ksemakshemam kim nu sampratham,

22. Kadam they kim nu sad vrutha durvrutha kim ne mey sutha.

“I do not know sitting here, about the well being of my sons, wives and other or of relatives. I do not know whether they are happy or suffering in their homes. I do not know whether my sons are well behaved bad character. ”

No different from bad sons of present day 5000 years back

My Rasa Mama (sri A.P.S.Iyer )

My Rasa Mama (sri A.P.S.Iyer )

BY

P.R.Ramachander

.A.P.S.Iyer  (called  Rasam In home and to me My Rasa  Mama)  ) was my maternal uncle . He was the elder brother of my mother. His full name was Ayalur Parameswara Iyer Subramanyan Iyer . Like all the lads of very poor families of Kerala , my extremely brilliant uncle had to leave his education and go for working in a hotel when he was a very young lad . When the world war started he joined as a civilian clerk in the military. This took him to Rangoon when the British were fighting with Japanese during the world war II . The Japanese over ran Rangoon and my uncle again reached back India. At that time tea was not a popular drink in South India. The Lipton company was trying to popularize it. My uncle got a job of a demonstrator with them. It was at this time that I was born. My earliest photo as a baby , which I treasure , was taken along with this uncle in a photo studio in Secunderabad. It was at this time , that India got independence. By this time my uncle had his own hotel in a place called Bhongir, near Hyderabad .When the king of Hyderabad refused to secede to India, there was big communal war in Hyderabad.. My father who was running a hotel in Secunderabad preferred to stay there. It was my uncle A.P.S.Iyer who brought me, my mother, sister and younger brother to Kerala. Since we did not have a house in Kerala, he took us to my maternal grand father’s place in Ayilur. After  a few years I  went back  to secunderabad   to study  in English medium school. Every wekk  , my uncle used to come to our hotel and sta with us.He taught  me lot of things in life and I also used to go to  Bhongir, to stay   with him and mami  almost every month. Though both of them are not there  I remember them always  .

Like his Father he too was  a great Bhaktha  of Pazhani Murukan.  After   death of his father  , he too started  to  Visit Pazhani during Thai Poosam , every year . He also presented  Ayilur  Krishna  temple  with Permanent lamp and he used to present   sufficient oil  to the temple , so that  the lamp   was burning always

My great uncle who used to wear Khadi due to his great thirst for knowledge and recognition ,studied , Urdu, Sanskrit and law even when he was running the hotel at Bhongir. He used to write Urdu poems , give lectures on several religious topics and was one of the very few Kerala Iyers who was a master in the art of Padakam (A musical narration of religious stories in Malayalam). He was also possibly the only Kerala Iyer who was imprisoned for agitating for the separate state of Telengana in 1968. He was also one of those great people of Hyderabad who used to help any Iyer in trouble coming to him. He was one of those founder member of the Subramanya Samajam of Hyderabad and was president of the Samajam till his death for a very long time. He had once told me that a letter addressed to him as A.P.S. Iyer, Andhra Pradesh reached him correctly .Possibly he should have been called “ Andhra Pradesh State Iyer”. With tears in my eyes I acknowledge the great contributions that he had made in my life.

In 1954 for one year   when my father  had sold our hotel  and gone back to our village  , he  was my local guardian  in my SEcunderabad school .Being free to do anything I wished  I did see  few pictures like Avvayar  again and again. That month my  marks took a slight dip . I had to take  signature  in my  progress report  from my uncle. He saw  it  and was annoyed  and told  me that  I  am spoiling my studies  by seeing  too many pictures  several times .This annoyed me a lot  and I promised  my uncle   that  I will not see  any more  cinema  till I completed my education

I stuck to my promise  and never  saw  any pictures  for another  16  years ie till  I got married. It was at this time that  I progessed  a lot  and at the age  of 23 , I got a gazetted  officers post  in an ICAR institute. I believed  that one of the reasons , for  the great   results  I got , was my uncle A.P.S. Iyer  ie my Rasa Mama. At this age  I feel sad  that  I never  told him this.Hope  he wil be reading this blog from heaven .

Translated from tamil by

P.R.Ramachander

Nurture a child                                    Effect

Always   finding fault                   It learns  to hate

With strict  control                       It learns to fight

Always teasing it                            It learns to be ashamed

Always insulting it                          It  becomes a criminal

Always encouraging it                   it  gets  mental  strength

Always praising it                            it learns  to appreciate

Always making it adjust                  it learns   to  be patient

Always making it honest                 It learns what is right

People who have influenced my life -A.P.S.Iyer of Hyderabad , My uncle.

People who have influenced my life -A.P.S.Iyer of Hyderabad , My uncle.

BY
P.R.Ramachander

I am thinking of writing about some people who have influenced my life and who are no more in this world .A.P.S.Iyer my maternal uncle comes to my memory first. . After six months we went to our own native place in Chelakkara , when our father purchased a house there. From then on for the next 4 years I studied in Kerala . My father then thought that it would be better if I studied in Secunderabad. So I leaving my mother and siblings in Kerala started to live in his hotel there. My uncle used to come every week to our hotel for weekly purchases. Several times I remember that I used to accompany him to an ice factory near Plaza theater of those days. I remember several times great intellectual discussions with him. Being a pet child of my father, who was extremely well read , I became a book worm. I also got terribly interested in seeing movies in Cinema theaters. After 3 years , my father had to sell off the hotel . He had told the man who purchased our hotel that I should be given free accommodation and food in that hotel for one more year , so that I can complete my matriculation in Secunderabad itself . My uncle was my local guardian who used to look after me , sign my progress reports etc. Due to being independent I started seeing too many movies and once my rank slipped from one of the top two to below ten. My uncle bombarded me and told that it was all because I was mad about movies .Being very sensitive and greatly upset I told him that, I will not see any more movie till I achieve what I want in life. For the next 16 years I did not see any movie even if it was screened free in the theaters of the university. Today looking back , I think I am what I am because of my uncle who showed me the correct path at the correct time.
A few more words about him. My great uncle who used to wear Khadi due to his great thirst for knowledge and recognition ,studied , Urdu, Sanskrit and law even when he was running the hotel at Bhongir.
