   This is a  famous  temple of Lord Shiva which  is 14 km from Kanchipuram on the Kancipuram Arkonam route. It is 40km from Thiruvallore and there is electric train to this temple from Chennai It is believed  that Lord Parvathi  made this Shiva LInga here  with  sand .It is also believed that Lord Vishnu worshipped  Lord Shiva  in this temple. The  linga is never touched by  human hands including that  of the priest  and is kept covered by metal  and the Lord is  supposed to have  “THeenda Thirumeni.  The God of the temple is also called Dhyanitheswarar  and also Maal vangeswarar(God saluted by Vishnu)  and the Goddess  is called  Anchanathchi  Amman   and also Karunai nayagi. Lord Shiva iis seen here  being worshipped by  Lord Vishnu  in this temple . * As Lord Vishnu got back His Sudharsana Chakra in this temple, it is believed that devotees who pray here would have no threats, whatsoever!

The temple  is in the Banks of Palaru  and is believed  to be 1500   years old and believed  to be built by Paranathaka Chozha-1

There  are some interesting legends  about the temple.

It seems Goddess Parvathi playfully closed the  eyes of Lord Shiva and  was cursed  to come to earth. She came and installed a  Shiva Linga   with sand , below a Vilwa  tree on the shore of Palar and when she  was worshipping it , the waters  of the river rose up.She hugged the Lingam to protect it and prayesd to  her brother Lord Vishnu.Lord Vishnu came here and in his reclining pose acted as a dam  and saved   the Linga. The place where  he did this is called  THiruparkadal   and  there is a temple of Lord Vishnu there.

There  is also another story that wanting to have a powerful weapon back( the previous one was destroyed when he sent it against saint Dadheechi) , Lord Vishnu came here and worshipped Lord Shiva  daily by offering  one thousand lotus flowers.One day he found one flower was short and for  that purpose he plucked his one eye  and offered it to Lord Shiva .Lord Shiva was pleased   and gave him Sudarshana  Chakra and also blessed  him to have lotus like eyes.Because of this, the place was called  Harichakrapuram in Sanskrit  and Thirumalpuram in Tamil.Lord Vishnu it seems requested Lord Shiva that a  devotee worshipping Lord Shiva here  should get equal benefit of worshipping in all  Shiva   temples in the world. “ He also prayed that the devotees who visit the lord here may be granted salvation. Acceeding to Lord Mahavishnu’s request, Lord Shiva informed him that whoever chants his 1000 names or at least chants his eight names (Theentachivanthar, Sadarubar, Manikandar, Dayanithiyar, Pavalamalaiyar, Vattanthavirthar and Sakisanar- சாந்தரூபர், மணிகண்டர், தயாநிதியார், பவளமலையார், வாட்டந்தவிர்த்தார், பாசப்பிணி விண்ட சாகிசனார்,  ), would be granted salvation.”Because  of this the Uthsava murthy of Lord Vishnu in this temple holds a lotus flower in one hand and one of his eyes on the other hand.

   Another story is that Lord Ravana came to worship Lord Shiva in this temple and entered the sanctum without  permission of Lord Nandi.Lord Ravana  who was a great devotee told him that he being a  great devotee  need not take any body’s ermission and cursed  that Lord Nandi should have a monkey face  and in turn Lord Nandi cursed  him that  his city would be destroyed by monkeys.Because i of this the Nandi in this temple is in a standing position and has a  face  of a monkey. It is also believed that Lord Moon worshipped Lord Shiva here  and got the boon to grow again.

There is also a belief that it was in this temple   that Lord Vishnu as Vamana asked for three  feet of land   from king Mahhabali.

There are temples   of Lords Vinayakar, Murugan with his consorts, Chidambareswarar, Somaskandar, Choleeswarar, Chandikeswarar, Natarajar, Veerabathrar, Bairavar, Suryan, Chandran, the four nayanmars , Goddess Gajalakshmi, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durgai  around the main temple

   Though Shiva temple , since Lord  Vishnu also is with him, Theertha is offered and Chadari is kept on the heads  of devotees,Vilwa is the Sthala  Vriksha of this temple

(Long , long back I had read somewhere  that anger is a poison that  we eat. When I read what sri Anantha Narayanan had written in Tamil , I wanted to write   about anger. I borrowed heavily from what he wrote.My thanks are to him)

Once some   I   did research   on anger,

To find out why  and   when it comes?

One person said , no one  is obeying him

And another said, he got  it when some one blames him

Yet another  person told   that he  would be angry ,

If some one falsely  implicates  him for a mistake,

Another said, if some one keeps on repeating  the same thing, he will be angry

And another said , he will be angry if he fails to get what he wants.

Those  persons were  asked  whether  they would ,

Ever  get  angry  on themselves   and without  even thinking,

They told, never , how can we  get angry on ourselves

And so anger comes on others  for small  errors  that they did.

I then remembered   that   the  great  sage   Durvasa  ,

Would have  become  the king  of   heaven but   for his anger,

Because   everytime   he got angry , he lost ,

All  the accumulated  Punya   that  he had earned.

Anger  is a self  inflicted  punishment  that  we give,

To ourselves which results  in  our loosing friends  and relatives,

Which creates  tension  within us affecting our body and mind,

And may lead  to nervous disorders  and  higher  blood pressure.

To avoid this anger  which leads  to strokes  and madness,

Please  do not  act in such a way  that others get angry with you,

Do not find fault  with others, do not expect   anything from others,

And if  some one gets angry at you , say first “Sorry” to them.

If some one makes you angry , tell them ,”Please let me think”,

And then think whether  it was  his fault  or your   fault ,

Normally by this time , the   cause  of  thatanger   would vanish,

And if it did  not , move away from there  and think.

To the person  who gets angry at you, talk normally,

Even if some one errs , do good to him  ,

Think about what you have really lost and you will realize,

Nothing very great   was lost and getting angry is a waste.

Realize that   we are all born in this world to achieve,

And not to get angry itself   is a very great achievement,

And also that out life is short  and to make it sweet ,

WE should never get   angry    against    anybody?

Am  I saying   what is correct?

Worship of  god  in Hinduism  can be  ,

In nine   different  ways of approach,

They are  Sravanam, Keerthanam ,

Smaranam, Padha   sevanam, Archanam,

Vandhanam , dasyam , sakhyam and Athma Nivedanam

Hearing  Gods  name , his prayers  and his stories  is Sravanam,

Learning  what we  heard  about God  and telling or singing it is Keerthanam

Smaranam  is always  thinking  of God and meditating  on him,

Padha  sevanam is serving  God   and God’s   creations,

Archanam  is  worshipping  God by offering him flowers,

Dasyam is feeling  that you are slave of God  who always  serves him,

Sakhyam is feeling of friendship to God, and moving like a friend to him,

Athma  NIvedanam is completly   surrendering  ourselves   to God

That   your patient  is completely  cured  ?”

And the doctor told  ‘We will give  him,

A bucket of water , a sppon and a mug .

And request him to   empty  the bucket.”

The journalist understood   and told the doctor,

“If he  empties it with a spoon, I hope he  is not cured or he is a baby,

But I were  given the task , I will empty   with the mug.”

I  had a  non believer  atheist friend  ,

And one day   we both saw  ,

That one of our common fiend has died,

Because   we were  informed by his crying son,

My father  has  reached the  lotus feet  of god.

My  atheist  friend  laughed  uproariously  ,

And told  me, “If  our friend    has really reached God ,

Why  is his son crying  and weeping,

Instead  he should be full of joy.”

My friend   had a  married  daughter ,

And I asked him , “I know  you gave ,

Your daughter in marriageto a prosperous family,

But on her marriage  day I saw you crying ,

Why were you not happy  that your daughter,

Would lead  a much happier life than you?”

My friend told because I  would miss her company,

And I told him,”Our  friend;s son  would also miss his father,

And that  may be the reason  that he is sad ,

Though  he  knows that  his father  would,

Reach  the lotus  feet  of God and be eternallay happy.”

   This is a great and ancient temple   and is situated near TRichy. You can reach Tirupattur, which is 10 kms from Samayapuram (5 kms diversion from Siruganur on the trichy-chennai highway and Perambalur route) by Tiruchy- Perambalur bus and also a town bus.       It takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.       The temple is opened at 7.30 am and upto 1 pm in the morning and is opened at 4pm and upto 8pm in the evening.     Thursdays and Sundays are busy days for the temple.    Guru’s Adidevatha is brahma.  The shops in front of the temple sell flowers and also lotus to be offered to Brahma.  The Rajagopuram faces the east and is of 5 stages.    On entering, you see the Kodimara and then the Nandhi under the Rudraksha mantap.  This mantap is known as Vedha Mandapam.    The inner mantapa known as Nadha Mantapa houses the sapthaswara pillars.    You cross this mantap and dwara palakas and enter to have the blessings of Lord Siva who showered his blessings on Brahma known as Brahmapureeswarar.

The  main deities  of the temple are Brahmapureeswarar, Brahmasampathgowri and Brahma.   Lord ganesha is in sanctum sanctorium of both Siva and Brahma.     The general belief of devotees is that Brahma does not have temples.   But the truth is that there is no temple of Siva without brahma, as he is present on the left hand side of Siva, from where the abhiseka theertham comes.    On the south of Nadha mantapa, a large sized brahma faces east.   The brahmasampathgowri temple is adjacent and on the northern side of kodimara and the goddess was prayed by brahma and the goddess bestowed the tejas back to Brahma and thus the power of creation and hence called brahmasampthgowri.  The Murugan,Valli and Deivayanai Sannadhi is behind the sannadhi of Brahma.   Other deities are mahavishnu, gajalakshmi, durga, sapthamadhas, Dakshinamurthy and Navagraha.

  There is interesting story about the origin of the temple ,It seems Lord Brahma got the  job of creation from Lord Shiva. Wanting to give him equal status Lord Shiva gave five heads to Lord Brahma  just like himself .When Lord Brahma became very proud and insulted lord Shiva he took away one jhead of Lord Brahma  and took away the  job of creation from him.. When Lord Brahma realised his mistake and begged   his pardon, Lord Shiva asked him to to THirupattur and consecrate there  his DWadasa lingas.Lord Brahma obeyed his order and installed  12 lingas of Lord Shiva  , which were 

The Twelve Siva Lingas installed by Brahma are:

1.       Sri Brhamapureeswarar                                (Moola sthanam)

2.       Sri Pazhamalai nathar                                   (opp to Pathanjali munivar sannadhi)

3.       Sri Pathala Iswarar                                        (Near to Chandikeswarar)

4.       Sri Thayumanavar                                         (Northern side of goddess sannadhi)

5.       Sri Mandooganathar                                      (Northern side of goodess sannadhi)

6.       Sri Ekambareswarar                                      (Northern side of goddess sannadhi)

7.       Sri Arunachaleswarar                                    (Northern side of goddess sannadhi)

8.       Sri Kailasanathar                                           (Northern side of goddess sannadhi)

9.       Sri Jambukeswarar                                        (Northern side of goddess sannadhi)

AS a result  Lord Brahma got back his power   and the  main deity of  the temple was  called  Brahmapureeswarar   and Goddess  was called Brahma  Nayagi  .Maha Periyava   once had told that  Lord Shiva handed over Vedas to the Goddess Ambika , who in turn handed it over   Lord Nandi who in turn , handed it over  to the sages in this temple.Possibly because  of that  there  is a temple for Lord Brahma  , a huge gigantic Nandi as also  prathishta for several sages  in this temple. Devotees believe that when you touch the Nandi idol , you have a sensation of touching  the real bull.

There is a peculiar  method of worship of Lord Brahma  in this temple. Devotees believe    that by worshipping lord Brahma  in this temple   marriages  take place, they get children , separated couples join together, fate changes , diseases   would be cured  and business  flourishes.  .He is worshipped with 36 lamps representing 27 stars and 9 planets ,He is offered 108 tamaring bals   and the devotee is asked to go  round the temple 9 times chanting  “GUrr Brahma  , Gurur Vishnu” .Lord Brahma    can be worshipped  only at 8 Am  on all days except Thursday and on Thursday(He is dressed on turmeric on that day.)  , he has to be worshipped  at 6 Am.It is also believed   if people worship   Lord Brahma without dfaith  things will worsen.

Since the twelve forms of Lord Shiva are   consecrated  in this temple  , the devotee  can worship all the jyothir lingas  in this temple itself. It is also believed   that sage Patanjalis Samadhi is in this temple.

   The Shodasa lingas   worshipped   by Lord Brahma   are  kept  in a hall where Lord Shiva   took away the curse  he has given to Lord Brahma.

On the southern side of kodimara is Pathanjali Munivar.       He is the one who gave ‘Yoga Sutra’  and also called as ‘Nithya kaingaryal’ as he prays daily the Brahmapureeswarar of this temple.

The Sthala Viruksha of this temple is Makizha maram.  This is on the northern side of the goddess sannnadhi and is believed to be of 150 years old.    The theerthas in the temple are: 1. Brahma theertham  2.  Bahula theertham   3.  Shanmuga river.     Brahma theertham is the one from which the water was taken by Brahma for abhisekam of the dwadasa lingams.  Bahula theertham is outside the temple, 150 metres away.    Shanmugha river is on the eastern side of the temple, 500 metres away, and flows from north to south and hence considered equal to River Ganges.

There is a ten day festival  in the month of Panguni  (March-April)  at this temple,.All Pradoshams are  celebrated with great  fanfare.

Abheeshtadha  Brahma Stotram

(Desire fulfilling prayer addressed  to Lord Brahma)

( There are few prayers addressed to Lord Brahma. Here is a great prayer addressed to him which would fulfill all our desires.)

1.Namo Hiranya garbhaya , Brahmane  , Brahma roopine  ,

Avijnatha  swaroopaya  kaivalyamruthaya cha.

Salutations to Hiranya Gharbha* who is absoulute and has the form of Brahma,

Who has an unknown form  and is the nectar of salvation.

                           * The golden generator of the universe.

2.Yam na Deva Vijananthi   , mano  yathrapi kuntitham,

Na yathra  vaak prasarathi  namasthasmai chidathmane .

When  devas   do not  understand  you  , then  they have worries in mind,

And    their voice   does not advance from them, Salutations to the divine soul.

3.Yoginio yam Hrudayakase pranidhanena nischala,

Jyothi roopam  prapasyathi thasmai sri Brahmane nama.

When Yogis with no activity in their mental sky    mediate on you,

They will see you in the form of a flame  and so salutations to Lord Brahma.

4.Kaalaath paraya kaalaya   swechaya  purushaya cha,

Guna thraya  swaroopaya   nama prakruthi roopine.

Oh God who is beyond time , is time   and  is an independent Purusha,

Who  has the  form of  Sathva, Rajas and Thamas, salutations to form of nature.

5.Vishnave sathva roopaaya   Rajo roopaya Vedhase ,

Thamase  Rudra roopaya   Sthithi sarganthakarine

Oh God who is Lord Vishnu in Satva form  , Lord Brama in Rajo form,

And Lord  Rudra in  the base form  , Oh god who creates maintains and destroys.

6.Namo Budhi Swaroopaya   tridahamkruthaye  nama,

Pancha thanmathra roopaya  , Pancha karmendriyathmane .

Oh God of the form of intelligence   Salutations   to him who  has thre types of egos,

Who has the form of  five subtle elements,   and who is the soul of five  organs of action.

7.Namo mana  swaroopaya, Pancha budhendriyathmane 

Kshithyadhi pancha roopaya  , namasthe vishayathmane.

Salutations to God of the form of mind  , who is the soul  of the five organs of  knowledge ,

Salutations to God who is the soul of five type of dwellings who is  also the soul of  material objects.

8.Namo Brahmanda roopaya  , thad antharvathine nama,

Arvaacheena  paraacheena , viswarooopaya they nama .

Salutations to God of the form of universe , salutations to god  who works within it,

Salutations    to God who is modern and ancient and has the form of supreme form.

9.Anithya nithya roopaya  sadasadpathaye nama,

Samastha bhaktha krupayaa  swechavishkrutha vigraha

Salutations  to him who is stable and unstable and who exists and does not exist,

Oh God who  of his own manifest s himself due to mercy to  his devotees.

10.THava niswasitham Vedaa , thavaswedho akhilam Jagath,

Viswaa bhoothani  they padaa, seershno  dhvow  samavarthatha.

Your breath are the Vedas , your perspiration  is the entire world,

All  beings of the world are at  your feet  and your two  head  return back  .

11.Nabhyaa  aaseed anthareeksham ,lomaani cha vanaspathi,

Chandrama manaso  jatha , chaksho  surya sthava prabho.

Your belly is the atmosphere, your hairs are the trees,

Moon was  born out of your mind and Oh Lord. Sun is your eye.

12.THwameva sarvam , THwayee deva sarvam,

Sthothaa Sthuthi  , sthavya   iha thwameva cha,

Eesaa  thwayaa  vasyumidham hi sarvam,

Namosthu   bhooyopi namo namasthe.

You are everything   , You are all the Gods,

One who prays, the prayer and the  one who is prayed are all you only,

Oh God ,  you are the one whose place of stay is in all places,

Salutations,  again salutations and salutations.

13.Ithi sthuthvaa vidhim  devaa  nipethur  dandavath kshithow,

Parithushta sthadaa Brahma  prathyuvcha  dhivoukasa.

After  the Devas prayed like this to Lord Brahma , they fell down on earth and saluted him,

And Brahma who was greatly pleased  told like this to the Devas.

Brahmo Uvacha:-

Lord Brahma said:-

14. Yadatha yaanaaya  sthuthyaa  thushtosmi   pranthaa suraa,

Uthishtatha  prasannosmi  vrunu thwam   varam uthamam.

 I am greatly happy with  your prayer  , Oh devas who are saluting me,

Please get up   as I am extremely pleased   and request for good boons.

15.Ya  sthoshyanaya  sthuthyaa   sradhavan  prathyaham suchi,

Maam vaa  haram vaa Vishnum vaa  thasys thushtaa sadaa vayam,

Daily  in a pure state   with devotion   if you pray using this prayer,

I or Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu   would be greatly happy with you.

16.Dasayaama sakalaan  Kaman puthran  pouthram  , pasun vasu,

Soubhagyam   ayur arogyam  , nirbhayathwam rane   jayam.

I am granting you fulfillment of all your desires, sons, grandsons  , cattle wealth,

Luck , long life , heath , fearlessness and victory in battle.

17.Aihikamushtikan bhogaan   apavargam adhakshayam,

Yadyath ishtathamam   thasya thathath   sarvam bhavishyathi.

You will get firm grip   on all the  pleasures  which would not be divided  nor vane,

And whatever   you desire most that will happen that way.

18.Asmad sarva prayathnena   padithavya sthavothama ,

Abheeshtasha ithi khyathaa  stavoyam sarva sidhidha.

If you  put is effort   and chant this great prayer addressed to me  ,

This prayer which  would be famous as “fulfiller of desires”   would get you all that you want

    Ithi   Skanda purane  , Kasi Khanda anthargatham   Abheeshtadha Brahma stotram.

This is the desire fulfilling prayer addressed to Lord Brahma which occurs   in the chapter of Benares 

 In the Skanda Purana.

1.Never get scared  of anything

Every one is scared  of death ,

But in Gita  the God teaches Arjuna ,

Not to be ever  scared of death,

AS    every death  is only a  change of form,

Even relationship   and wealth die,

And a life without   fear is indeed pretty.

2.Never  suspect  anything

Unnecessary suspicion is the chief  cause,

Which takes away  peace   and joy  from life,

For a person who  suspects   everything ,

Cannot live with peace  in this or  his future lives,

But the curiosity  to know  oneself   should never,

Be  considered as  suspicion .

3.Get freedom  from  attachments

Our mind   would be peaceful  only ,

If we  get  freedom from  innumerable ,

Attachments  like  possession , passion,

Ambition , pride   and   egoism,

And only a  peaceful mind  can,

Get wisdom   and  freedom from worries.

4.Get freedom from worry about the result

When we  plan carefully to do anything,

Never  start  worrying   weather  ,

WE will meet   with  failure  or victory,

But do the entrusted job  with truth  and honesty.

5,Never swerve   away  from the  path of duty

Running away and hiding    ourselves  ,

From  the job  entrusted   to us  does not take  us forward,

Getting away   from attachment  to the family and friends ,

Is not path  to spiritual knowledge or permanent  peace,

Running away   from  our responsibilities  when  we lead a  normal life,

Is not at all easy  and would lead  to  utter failure and great sorrow

6.Understand   the  ultimate  Godhead

If we are able to bid farewell  to all attachments,

Then it would be easy   for us    to submit to that  Ultimate God,

Understand   that  each individual  is the work of  art of God,

And  blaming  the  past and fearing the future is a useless  exercise ,

Which would take us away  from  understanding ultimate  Godhead .

7.If  you are egoistic, wisdom is of no use

If  a mirror is fogged ,  we will not be  able to,

See  our  reflection  on that  mirror   clearly  ,

Similarly   the  mind  of an egoistic person ,

Is fogged and it cannot reflect  wisdom ,

And his  day today life    would be  full of problems.

8.Observe  tolerance  of   view  on everything

The person who cannot   do proper  meditation,

Would not  be able to observe control  over his actions.

Taking lot of  food or  no food at all  does not take you,

Nearer   to God  but proper meditation can win always.

9.Anger is   the path to errors so practice  peace

Uncontrolled   anger  makes  you incapable of  finding out,

The good or bad  in every   thing   we do or attempt,

And anger is the reason for failure  of  every thing in life,

And it is the  main gate   to  the disaster  in life and hell.

10.Understand that body is temporary but soul is   for ever

Lord Krishna   compares  our life  to a piece  of dress ,

And says that the soul changes  its   dress (the body) often,

And he also tells Death is to the  body and not to soul.
