Pulakottu Madams
Compiled by
Raja Thatha
(Pure recollection of a
very old man .Mistakes might have
been there.Please pardon)
Pulakkottu madams
are families who have their
original homes in Pulacode. Pulacode is
a very small village near Chelakkara About 5000
people live in this village with
nearly 1000 homes as of now .It
must have been very much smaller about
60 years back. At that time where 8 ? Brahmin houses there. Brahmins of the eight houses belonged to one clan and the ninth
house was an outsider Vekiteswaran(referred to as Kadangodan or Minor Vekateswaran). His mother belonged to
Pulacode and was given in marriage to a
person from a Village outside(possibly
Kadangode). His father died early and his
mother returned to her village.Because
he was rich and young , and was even magistrate in the Magistrate
court of Chelakkara
Since one of the
persons of that village was my father’s uncle
I used to visit the village very often. My father’s uncle was one
Veeramani .There was also another Veeramani(referred to as Pothan Veeamani
because he was fat), one Lakshmanan, One Krishnan(who was referred to
asAnnadatha because he used to
repeat Annadatha Sukhee bhava) , one
Raman ?and two more houses(I have
completely forgot about them),Adjoining
the village there is one Kathyayani
temple and a temple tank.Very near it
there was an ambala vasi family of Varriars.
In my village
Chelakkara there were three prominent
families (Chamu mama, Pichu Mama ,
Restral Narayana Iyer and one Meppadam
Ramachandran) ,Sri P V Veeramani of pulakott madam Puthucode was my co
brother), There was one ammanchi family
and Plakottu Krishnan and his family
known to us In puthucode
.Possibly there may be more Pulakottu madams there,.
Pulacode used to grow luxurious paddy crop.Possibly all the land were owned
by few families in Puthucode(called
Pulakottu madams). For
cultivation under their supervision
eight families migrated to
Pulacode and 3-4 families migrated to Chelakkara. Those in Chelakkara and Puthudcode were slightly well off and those living in
Pulacode village were middle class families .All of them except one
family have migrated outside the
village. When Pulakode visited it 20 years back, there was just one Brahmin lady with her slightly
retarded daughter was living there.I
understand that now one person who was working in Mumbai has gone back to the
village and is living there
I spent
almost a day in search of a photo of
Kathyayani temple of Pulacode online.I could not get .One member
of the great family lives near me
in Bangalore. He had a great photograph
of Goddess Karthyayani.
I am posting it here
as the greatest gift for all people
of Pulakottu madams in the world.
