(Our prime minister Sri Narendra modi while inaugurating the  international chess  tournament  in Chennai  mentioned about this temple .Since I wanted to know  about Goddess and god who played chess  , I collected these info.Hope you will find it interesting)

 

 

Origin

King Vasudeva prayed Nellayappar for a child and  Goddess was born to them as their daughter

When royal couple where taking bath they saw  a conch placed on a lotus flower which became a baby girl.She was named as Rajarajesri, Her  nurse was one of the saptha Kanyakas calledchamundeswari.Rajarajeswari became an expert in chess. King said, those who win her in chess could marry her  .No one  was able to defeat her.When they were  taking pilgrimage, God met them in form of a very old  sidha and  he said , he  was master in chess.He won Rajarajeswari and married her.And immediately got transformed in to Lord shiva God is called  master in chess(Chaturanga Vallabheswarar) .

Purpose  of coming here

Lord is prayed for curing ashthma, those suffering from   rat poison  Mother  Chamundeswari (the saptha kannika  who was the  nurse of the Goddess)  for problems of finance in business and boon of a child

Poovanur(called Pushpavanam in ancient times) 612803   is 12km from, mannargudi, 5 km from Needamangalam.There is a railway station in Poovanur(Thiruvarur-Mannargudi line.Get down here cross Paamani river  and walk little
