The Rabbit –tortoise running race story retold as poem

The Rabbit –tortoise   running  race   story  retold as poem

By
P.R.Ramachander

(This is 100 % based on the tamil write up of  my friend  Devanathan  Srinivasarangan. Acknowledgements and thanks to him.)

Rabbit boasted “ I am faster.”
Tortoise   challenged the rabbit
Due to pride  Rabbit  slept on the way,
And the tortoise   won   -                                    Slow  and steady  wins the race

Rabbit could not tolerate,
Rabbit challenged  tortoise  again,
Rabbit did not sleep on the way .
And the rabbit   won                                         Speedy and steady   wins the race

Tortoise  could  not tolerate ,
Tortoise   challenged rabbit   again,
Tortoise   chose the  path of the race ,
Tortoise swam  and crossed a river on the way and won       Exploitation of weakness  of contestants
                                                                                                           Leads to victory
Rabbit  became   friends  with tortoise,
And again both raced on tortoise path,
Rabbit  rode on tortoise back  in the river,
And both tortoise   and  Rabbit won                                            Team work leads  to victory

Rabbit or tortoise   can both win ,
Without attempting  you cannot win,
If we attempt and get defeated  it is experience,
If   we do not attempt and get defeated it is insult

Victory  is not permanent,
Defeat    is not the end,
Victory   and defeat  ,

 Both depends on attempt

Pranams to the anonymous Policeman of Aluva( Alwaye )

Pranams  to the anonymous  Policeman  of Alwaye

On 13th  morning I left  Bangalore and reached  Aluva (Alwaye)  at around 4.15 PM . The BJP   had called a state   wide Harthal   from 6 am to 6 PM   on that day . We had to visit  a 96 year old grand father  of  my daughter in law in Aluva and then  reach Kaladi by 7 PM . WE had almost decided   that we will wait in the station   and  go after 6 PM  to visit him for a few minutes. When we came out   we saw a policeman  standing on duty standing before  the station . Me and my wife approached him    and asked him , when we   will get an auto. He enquired where   we wanted to go  and we toild him Aluva Shivarathei  Manapuram.  The policeman swung in to action. He  enquired   with one of his friend   whethere he can take us to   that place. Unfortunately   he had not brought his car. Then he told us that  he would put us in the free   shuttle bus to airport   and order them to drop near the place   we wanted to go. Since we had luggage  , we could not accept his offer . Then he called an auto    and ordered the driver  to take us to that place .He told him to collect the normal   sixty rupees charge from us
I was astounded  by the courtesy of that policeman . I told him  , that  in my 76 years life  I have never come across   any one like him. He told us   that he  was only doing his duty and being old people , he considered  us as his parents  in trouble . With  tears wetting my eyes , I took leave of that   great human being . May God bless   that anonymous policeman  with prosperity  , long life and great health

Need for happiness –Quo vadis ?

Need for happiness –Quo vadis ?

By
P.R.Ramachander

“I need happiness “said a rich lady,
Who  was dressed nattily   and ,
Was   living   in great  luxury ,
To her  psychiatry  counselor  .

That Counselor   called the maid ,
Who was cleaning his office ,
And told the very rich lady ,
I would ask her  the way to happiness.

That maid    sat on the chair  ,
And started    telling  with a smile,
“My son died  three months ,
After  my husband died of Malaria.”

“I did not have    any body  to love,
I culd not sleep or eat or smile.
I thought   that the best  option,
Was to end this  joyless  life.”

“When things    were  like this  ,
One day   while returning from office,
In torrential rain  ,  a cat followed me,
And taking pity on it , I allowed it in my home.”

“I gave it a little milk  and after  drinking it,
It caressed  my feet in a lovely manner  ,
And I smiled    first time  in three months,
And thought  how the lovely cat   made me smile.”

“I thought   that if  a good deed  done to a cat,
Could make me happy  , why cant  I change ,
Myself   and try to   do  good deeds  for many,
So that I could be happy  many more times.”

“Next day I gave gruel  and tea to A neighbour,
Who  was sick and who   did not have any one,
And saw that the joy   that made   his face ,
Flower like lotus   was immeasurable.”

“Like this   I went on doing   many little things,
That made others   happy, which in turn,
Made me happy, sleep  , eat    as well as,
Smile   and  made me a joyful self.”

Hearing all  that  , the rich modern lady,
Wept , cried   and shed tons of tears,
AS she realized   that   she had  only
Those things    which  money could buy.

She realized   that joy cannot be  brought for money,
Because  joy   comes  by transferring it   ,
To the one who needs it   and beauty  of life,
Is not in how much   happy you   are.

Because joy comes   from transferring it,
To the one   who   is in need of joy
And Joy is not   your destination ,
But   it   is the  travel to the land of joy.

Joy is not the   future  but the present,
It is not what     you  undertake  ,
But  it is your  own determination,
Joy is not what you have but who you are.

Become joyous by making others happy  ,
And the  world and God would become happy  ,
Because of you   and  there  would be no need,
For you to have a counselor , astrologer  or a priest.

Miserable saga of man’s life ?- Sweet up to sixteen and sorrow afterwards

Miserable   saga  of man’s life ?-
Sweet  up to sixteen  and sorrow   afterwards

By
P.R.Ramachander

(This again is based on a great write up  in Tamil  my   face book friend  Hamsabai  Santhaana  Krishnan.I do not agree  with it entirely  as I feel  that “Life is miserable to all   who think like that”.  I also feel that  a woman’s life  is much more  miserable.)

1.The joy of one  who was  born,
AS a male   is only  till he reaches   the teen,
For  though he is  the one whose   birth is celebrated,
All his life  he  would  face  nothing but  problems.

2.Till he   completes  first ten years  of his life ,
He   flies   like  a very independent bird,
Then the say , “Hey study   well  from  now on,
If not , no college  for you  but  only  training  Institutes.

3.When he  joins the   eleventh   standard ,
His father warns him , “Hey boy  ,
Work   extremely   hard  for two years,
Otherwise it would be workshop not engineering.

4.After  two years  of hard work   when  he  joins,
The engineering college, his  father again warns,
“I did not inherit  great  wealth   from  my father,
So do not go on  spending  money like   water.

6.After   four years  of day and night   study,
Without  enjoying  any thing in life,
It would be meaningless if  he does not get  a placement,
For the  shouting  words  of parents  would make his  life a  misery.

7.They  would say “It f you were   a girl , it would not have mattered,
WE would have  managed to buy   you some ornaments,
And handed you over   to someone, you are a  man,
You have  to earn money  to clear the loan  and  ,
To give   your sister  in marriage   in a good family.”

8.After one joins for a job  , he becomes a small fish in  a big town,
Very careful in spending money  so that   all the dreams of  his family  are realized,
He has to take food  in a budget joint  , travel in a  rickety bus,
And act as  if he was    in the  ocean of joy  before  his parents.

9.By the time  the  family  loan is repaid,  his sister  is married off,
The parents would  say , “How  long will you   eat,
The hopeless   food in the   worthless  hotel,
You better  get married    to a nice little girl.”

10.Then comes   the most  miserable  second part  of  his life.
If he shows love to his wife, mother  feels miserable ,
And if he  shows  any interest  on his parents says the wife,
“You are family man now , you have given  them sufficiently ,
And it is time  for you  to start   to plan  for our   future.”

11. He should not tell  his problems  of office in home,
Nor should  he  tell the misery in home to others,
And  he would  realize   that desire  is for 60 days  and passion for thirty days,
And small  differences in love life   would become a raging war.

12.Bending  and getting crushed   when the voice of lady becomes loud,
Having lost  hhis backbone as he is   unable to say “no”  to the wife,
Unable   to neglect   the parents,  giving support to both sides,
He would  keep on getting   bad name   from both as  well as the world.

13.Then he  produces   kids so that   his clan does not end,
Nurture them to become great and  he   gets  the name  of “miser”,
When he is   not able to meet their needs and  get a name,
“Morose face”  if  he is  not able   to smile  when  if he  is  called names like that.

14.He would   buys good , costly   and fashionable cloths  for  his  family,
For any   festival in house ,  but would search for “Buy one , take two”.
For buying his cloths  and suppose   after   struggling  to pay,
For presents and ritual  needs in relation houses,
He takes loans   and he would  get  bad dreams  and bad name only.

16.If with all these  botherations   and problems riding over him,
Suppose he  neglects to love his wife, she  would wail,
“There  is a man in my house  who does not know  that he has a wife”
And if  some of his relatives or friends  buy a new house  or car,
She would yell, “I too got a  useless  husband  who is good for nothing.”

17.If he   shows  love to his children, he  is spoiling them,
Suppose  he is n bothered   to look after  his old parents ,
She would  say, “There  are other children   beside you to your parents.”
And to a man whatever he   does will only earn him a bad name.

18.For carrying a child for  nine months, She would be praised all her life,
But for  carrying his family  and   its problems    always  in his mind,
There is no fame for him and he  would be   greatly   happy,
If no one   find   faults   with him. What a tragedy?

19.Inspite  of all these  if that  poor man  does indeed succeed,
There would be claims   from his  parents and his wife ,
Claiming   that but for them  this useless  one,
Would never  have   succeeded  in anything whatsoever.

20.All the joy   of being a man is till he becomes a  teen,
Afterwards  , the ploughs  kept on his   neck,
Would always push him down to the earth,
And he has  to   sorrowing struggle  to  pull the burden, all   his  life.

Old is not always gold -says the younger generation

Old  is not always gold  -says  the younger  generation

By
P.R.Ramachander

1.Some  grandpas   both from cities  and small  villages,
Had their  usual meeting   on the  benches of a city park.
They then   started  talking    about    the greatness  ,
Of those days   when they were  naughty  young children.

2.Those times were great as we   were  all healthy  ,
As guided  by our parents   wise, we were   taking,
Healthy food and    as all of us had back breaking work,
We never  had any  physical   problem to worry.

3.Since   all the   ladies  of our houses were loving,
Caring and hard working   , we never had a care in the home.
All of us   got married   at a very  young age ,
So that there  were  no wants , and no yearnings in our life.

4.When they were  chatting like  this loud enough,
For all people   to hear , a few young lads   playing ,
On the other   side  of the park   approached them,
And asked “Oh Grandpas,  can  we  clear our doubts.”

5 “  We did read some books  about   the   life   ,
Of then and now in the  library   and it said.
The   age when people were  expected to die  then,
Was thirty   and now  it is   definitely nearing  seventy.”

6.” Those   books   further said  that  if a man attains sixty,
It called   for a very great celebrations   as such people were  very few.
And as for the people   celebrating   their eighty    second birthday,
They were so less ,  that such functions  were held  once in a decade.”

7.”Photos of roads   and places   showed    clearly  that,
Most of the old people of  fifty to sixty, walked hunch back,
With a  walking stick to support   them  and also,
Most of those   people  did not have  teeth and could not  read.”

8.”We are  sure   that all of you agree  that  , you  attend,
Every month  three  to four sixtieth     birthdays  ,
Almost  every two months  one   eightieth birthday,
And you have   attended  recently several  hundredth  birthdays.”

9.”You also are quite   aware   that during    those  days,
Almost   every home   had  miserable widows,
Whose age     ranged   from ten to forty
Working  like   maid servants   for the family.”

10.”You   also   would  without   hesitation    agree with us,
That none of you  are hunched back   and none of you,
Ever use  walking stick,  and you read  lot of books  ,
And have either teeth in tact or  have  put dentures.

11.”It said that  the   food  you  could afford then    was minimal,
Devoid of all nutrition , as it lacked   varieties  of fruits and vegetables.
Due to poor   nutrition    and lack of health care  ,
Large  number  of mothers died  during  delivery.”

12.”WE are sure   you  use nowadays ,  lots of  varieties of vegetables ,
And there  is none here   who  do not eat   apples,
Pomgranates  and several other  fruits regularly ,
And  none of  us  have  heard  of death during   delivery   any time recently. “

13.”We  are   sure   you  that all of you  without fail,
Have noticed  that your children    are  much taller ,
As well as healthier   than you , because ,
They are having  much nutritious  food than you.”

14. “Even the babies    were   then  very poorly fed ,    as  they,
Came in a dozens in every home   and even a   rich father,
Could not afford   to feed them all to keep them all healthy,
And  the book said  a very large percentage of them died in infancy.”

15,”I am sure    all of you have  noticed   without fail,
That  most of the homes   have one   child or two,
And are   being brought    up like  children of kings,
With great  education   a coupled  with luxurious  living.”

16,”All of you are  aware   how our present  heavenly  homes,
During   your time  was   much more   than a hell,
By incessant  in- law   quarrels  , some times for dowry,
Some times just for fun ,which even lead  to burning  of brides.”

17.”True  we have changed, When  some one  tells something we  question them,
We  some times   do have  a miserable   life with a wife  , questioning   us,
WE spend lot of money   to make our life   in to a dream land heaven,
We leave  our children  with Ayas   , even when they are  babies”

18.”In our rat  race   called life  , when each of us tries to excel the other,
We  regretfully some times   are  not  able  to  do our duty properly,
Possibly we   are  not  that  good parents like you  neither  are we good sons,
But we   can assure you   that we want to do it   and we will do it.”

19 .’The seniors started  mulling over   what  has been told to them,
And felt that  there   was some truth  in   what  those lads told,
They felt they  themselves were  dwelling   only   the good   that was in past,
Ignoring lot of bad  that existed and  they all  went to their homes  better informed.

A lullaby to the mother sung by a son

A lullaby    to the  mother  sung by a son

By
P.R.Ramachander

(Times  have changed. There  seems to be no need to sing a Lullaby(Thalattu  ) for babies  any more . The baby likes   TV  music better and also  the  mother of babies  do not have  time  for this non sense. But the  elders in the house   do not get sleep  due to various reasons . I imagined  the son of a mother  sitting by her side   and l singing in a lovely  affectionate  voice a lullaby   to make her sleep No  I am not  joking .How I wish it happens?)

Oh my mother, oh my treasure,
Oh  my first  teacher ,  Thalelo (Please sleep)

Did   my Father   shout  at you  dearest one,
You know  that  it is habit, please  sleep,

Did you   get tired  by ceaseless work  ,
Throughout the day, Please  close you eyes  and sleep,

Did not   the  maid servant   come  today ,
And made you work, Take rest now   and please  sleep.

Did   your children   demand , this and that,
And made  you work hard , It is time to sleep, please sleep.

Did you want   a new Sari   to wear tomorrow,
I will take you  to the shop tomorrow  , please sleep,

Did  my wife  trouble   you and made  your day bad,
I will chide her  soon, You please   sleep.

Did my  younger  brother  and sister  had,
Too much work  and you had do it, Please  sleep.

Were   you not  able to  take your after noon nap,

Do not bother , now    you please  sleep.
