Do you know how
Coimbatore got his name? Kaviarasu Kannadasan tries to answer.
Kovai
By
Kaviarasu Kannadasan
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(The king among poets
is trying to do some
research on the origin of the name Kovai
of the city of Coimbatore. He also
praises the city for its culture
, its pleasing and very cultural lingo and heart warming food. Having spent three
unforgettable period of my life
in that great city, I was
really charmed by the poem, which was
posted by my face book friend Vasudevan Srinivas.
I know that I am
not capable of bringing out the
beauty of the poem written in
chaste and sweet Tamil. I made a
trial because Kovai has fed
me also. The poem in tamil script is
given at the end.)
The beauty of lips of a lady is described
as Kovai(A reddish fruit),
The complete chain
of lisps of a baby
is called Kovai(String of beads)
In the honey like Tamil
there is a book called “Divine Kovai”(collection of poems)
There are books
written by great poets called kovai
(string of words)
Why did they call this
city as Kovai(Coimbatore)?
Why did they make
this pretty city of Coimbatore?
I would tell my opinion, If well known Tamil Scholars,
Say that it is wrong
, let it be wrong.
To the king of Vanchi country, where
pretty maids played
There were
two sons .
The great archer Senguttuvan who cut off his enemies and went to north,
And the other one was
the Lord Ilango who composed poems on the anklets in Tamil,
One innocent
philosopher seeing their
signs .
Foretold that the younger
son would become the king.
Hearing that ,
the Lord Ilango taking a decision ,
That only the
elder son should rule the country
,
Established a hut
in the borders of his kingdom,
And stayed there
alone with Chathan(an assistant).
That new city
which was established by that
Ilakovan(young prince) ,
Got the name new
city and became Koyam puthur(new city of the king )
This is the historical proof of the natural change of its name.
The Tamil grandma
told it to spread its lands
on the blue mountain valley,
And made the
southerly breeze to go round and round
in side it ,
And made the mind
of its children as pure as milk
And made the culture
and love as its friends.
Good people are
living in that Kovai ,
And all the
culture that surrounds us is in Kovai,
And all the taste and culture that we know is in Kovai ,
What kind sir ,
What is that kind sir , It is so kind sir
,
I have it kind
sir , Yes kind sir , Please come to see it kind sir
This is deer kind sir , Do you want it kind sir, Please buy it
from me kind sir,
I also have
Moutain Banana kind sir , Please take it
kind sir.
This is honey, kind sir, Take it in your hand kind
sir , Please drink in kind sir ,
This is Tirupur ghee
, kind sir , It is very pure kind sir.
What kind sir ?, Please get up kind sir , Please take
your seat kind sir ,
Hey Boy, Take that
sweet Kheer and serve it.
Hahaha , If a feast comes
in Kovai ,
You should have six days hunger and you should have a big stomach
It is wrong sir, You should not come to Kovai ,
They would kill
you by feeding you,
Only those great seven philanthropists are
equal to them
Their heart is
very tall and it is the treasure of
water springs ,
It is a practice of our clan , to sing about those who
gave
Just for getting
their charirty very many people came
here ,,
To sing about the charitable king who gave
away the sweet fruit* ,
The Poet Avvai sang as much as it was possible for
her ,
With separately keeping the fruits along with honey .
*King Athikaman gave a divine gooseberry fruit to Avvai
During those days Poet Kamban praised those who gave ,
Because the songs of the poet are the praises on the one who gave them ,
Why should there
be a shortfall?
I also did it.
