Sung from
anywhere , you remember the
great Goddess Mookambika of
Kollur .A short write up about the temple followed by stotras, Krithis and songs on the Mother
of the universe is given below:-
Adhi
Sakthi is the goddess who is the primeval power . Brahma, Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess
Parvathi, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess
Lakshmi are only a part
of this Primeval power .In India there
is only one temple which is the temple of this primeval power and that is the temple of Mookanbika
, which is on the Kutajadri mountain , on the banks of Sowparnika river in a
town called Kollur in Karnataka .
There are some interesting stories
about the origin of this great temple. Kutajadri mountain is
considered to be a fallen piece of Sanjeevini mountain when Lord Hanuman was carrying it. It is believed that the juice of all the
herbs of the mountain are mixed in the r flowing waters of the river and any body taking bath in it
would be cured of all diseases. It Is also believed that Suparna(Garuda) did
penance on its banks and got cured of his curse.
Kollur can be reached by
bus or Taxis from Udupi or
Mangalore.Udupi is the nearest railway station and Mangalore is the nearest air port.
In very ancient
times there was a great sage called Kola Maharshi who was doing
Thapas here addressed to all the Trimurthis. When they appeared before
him , he requested them all to be present here in the form of
a single God and fulfill the desires off all those who come
here to worship the God and also requested that
the place should be called after
him. . The Gods fulfilled his wish and assumed a form of a Linga and
stayed here and the place was
named as Kola Pura.Kola Maharshi stayed in that place worshipping the Linga. Meanwhile a
powerful Asura called Kamasura did penance here to get great strength. When
Lord Brahma appeared before him, He asked a boon that he should not get killed by any god or deva
or Yaksha or Gandharwa or man .Lord Brahma granted the boon .Later he married
a Yaksha lady called Chandra Prabha who was a devotee of the Goddess wanted a
temple of the Goddess to be built for
her . The soldiers of Kamasura fould
Kola pura as the proper place and forcibly evacuated all the
sages doing penance there and a
built a temple of Goddess for her. Meanwhile when Sage Shukra warned Kamasura that he could be killed by a lady , he again
went to do penance to Lord Shiva. But when Lord Shiva appeared
before him, Goddess Saraswathi removed
the power of speech from the Asura so that
he could not ask for any boon. From
then onwards he was called Mookasura .
Then All the goddesses took one form and
killed Mookasura then and there again in KOlahpura. At the
time of death Mookasura asked for a boon
from the Goddess that she should
stay in that place and bless all
devotees , but she should be called by his name .The goddesses agreed to that and decided to merge with the
trimurthy linga which was already there and thus that Linga became the primeval
Sakthi and she was called Mookambika . That Inga has the trimurthies on the
right side and their consorts on the left side .A gold line divides the Linga in to these two portions and as such the lInga is considered as Ardha Nari Swaroopa (Half lady form) Later When Adhi Sankara established a temple for Goddess Saraswathi in Sringeri ,
he also wanted to consecrate a
temple for her in Kerala. The Goddess agreed and
told that she will follow him to
Kerala but if he looks back at any time she would be
forced to stay there . Sankara
who was hearing the anklets of Goddess
following him, did not hear them
when she walked on the sands of Souparnika river and he looked back. The Goddess decided
to have a temple there itself but when Adhi Sankara requested her , she
agreed to be present in Chothanikkara temple in Kerala during
the early morning Nirmalya Pooja
. Adhi Sankara also consecrated a Sri
Chakra at this temple. From then on al
Keralites considered her as their
goddess Saraswathi. So every keralite dreams
of conducting the Vidhrambha of his child at this temple .Because of this lakh
of pilgrims come to this temple from Kerala and other states . Tuesdays and
Fridays are considered as special and the
crowd would be larger. The temple
timings are as follows:-
The temple
opens at 5 am (The temple daily opens
only after the Nirmalya Darsanam at
Chothanikkara temple is over ) and
closes at 1. 30 PM .The
devotees cannot have Darsan between 7.15
Am -7.45 AM and between 12.20 PM to 12.45 PM .
The temple
again opens for Darsan at 3 PM and is kept open up to 9 PM .
In between there
are six Kala poojas. The Evening Pooja is called “Salam Mangalarthi “ because it seems Tipu
Sultan who came to this temple , became charmed by the Goddess and did Salam to her at this time. At ( PM
there is a special pooja called Kashaya
Mangalarthi , when the Goddess is
offered a decoction of several herbs. It Seems Adhi Sankara has introduced
this and taking this Kashaya would cure all diseases
and it is distributed after the pooja to
the devotees. Free
food is served to all devotees in this temple during lunch time .

details of the temple are :-

(Octet on the Goddess Mookambika)
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Mookambika is the goddess presiding over the temple town of Kollur, 135 km from Mangalore, Karnataka. Here the goddess is in the linga form. In the smaller half of the lings, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma reside and in the bigger half (separated by a golden line) resides the mother goddesses of Durga, Saraswathi and Lakshmi.
In the ancient times, it is believed that there was a saint called Kola Maharshi who did penance at the present Kollur.(the place was named after him) He was troubled by a Rakshasa called Mookasura. The Adhi Prashakthi killed Mookasura and helped Kola Maharshi to do penance in peace. That is the reason why she is called Mookambika.
She is a very popular goddess of Karnataka and Kerala. People of Kerala consider her as Saraswathi and make it a point to visit Kollur as often as possible. It is a dream for many of them to teach the first alphabets to their babies in the Mookambika Temple on the Vijaya Dasami day.)
