A short introduction to the great Thiruvarur Thyagaraja temple

A short introduction to  the great Thiruvarur  Thyagaraja temple   and few   Krithis and a Stotra  praising gods   of the temple

Compiled  by
P.R.Ramachander

Thiruvarur    temple
Thiruvarur    which was in the olden  days called   as   Arur houses  one of the beigest  temple  dedicated to Lord Shiva .It is    one of the saptha Vidanga   sthalams. It can  reached easily from either Kumbakonam as well as Thanjavur    and is situated on the  Nagapattinam-Kudalur   high way .Devotees believe   that all those   who are born in this town get salvation and they are all Bhootha Ganas   of Lord Shiva ,In fact one of the very important  Saiva Saints Sundaranar  has   written that “I am the slave   to all those  born in Thiruvarur”.  The temple is  spread over an area of 35 acres   and has  9 Raja gopurama,  80 domes over temples(Vimanas)   12 high raised walls  , 13 Mandapams, 15   sacred water wells, three  flower gardens  , three  Prakarams and  more than 100   independent shrines. It  has a huge tank called  Kamalalayam  (25 acres-largest temple tank in Tamil Nadu )  attached  to it.   All the three  great Carnatic music  trinities  Saint Thyagaraja , Muthuswami Deekshithar   and Shyama Sashtri    were born in this town. It is believed that 364 miracles   were performed in this temple  town by  God Thyagarajar. Lord Yama   himself is  doing the duties of Chandikeswarar   in this temple as Lord Shiva   felt that  he does  not have any work for him in  this holy town.  Lord Bhairava in this temple is called Sidhi Bhairava. The Chariot of the temple is very huge and is called “aazhi ther”
The main deity of the temple is Vanmika Nathar   with his consort Kamalambikai  . There  is an interesting story of   the origin of this temple. It seems  once upon a time Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma , Indra and other devas   started performing  fire sacrifices.  Before the start of this Yaga , they all agreed  that whosoever outlasts  all others in performing   the Yajna is the greatest  . Lord Outlasted all of them and becoming very proud, along  with the sacred bow that  he got from the sacred fire place  , he started chasing all the other devas and because of that   they reached   the place of the  temple  .Due to the influence of  Goddess Mahasakthi, Lord Vishnu started getting tired and stood there  leaning on his bow. On the advice of their Guru , the devas took the form of ants and started   eating away  the string of that bow. When the bow   suddenly broke, the head of Lord Vishnu was cut off .When the devas   were scared by this act , Lord Shiva rose   from an ant hill on the fire pit   and again gave life  to Lord Vishnu. This form  of Lord Shiva which rose from   earth is called Valmika Nathar  and is the main deity  of the temple. No Abhishekam is   performed to Valmika Nathar . This is done to the Marakatha Lingam (Emerald lingam)  kept in this temple.
Later Lord Vishnu did penance to please lord Shiva  here . When Lord Shiva  and Goddess Uma blessed him, Lord Shanmuga was sitting in between them  . When Vishnu wanted that  image to worship , Lord Shiva gave it to him. This image called Thyagaraja was given by Lord Vishnu to Lord Indra  to protect himself from his enemies  .Later when King Muchukunda  of Tamil Nady  helped  Lord Indra in a war and when Indra gave him a boon he only  wanted from  him this idol of Thyagaraja. Indra instantly made six more copies and gave it Muchukunda and asked him to  choose the right idol  .He  chose   the right one  and Indra gave all the idols of Thyagaraja as present  to King Muchukunda  .King Muchukunda consecrated the original idol given to Vishnu by Indra in Thiruvarur. This is the original Vidanga idol and is called Veedhi VIdangar    Normally the feet of this idol is  kept covered and when this God Thyagaraja Swamy comes out , he   dances a dance  called Ajabha dance. The left leg of the Vidangar   is displayed during Panguni uthram and  his right leg displayed during Thiruvadirai festival. Apart from The Thyagaraja shrine separate shrines are there  for   , Thirumoola nadhar  , putritangondar   with Alliyangothai ,  Neelothpalambal(With a maid holding Lord Muruga standing near by)   , Asaleswarar ., Adageswarar, Varunsewarar , Annamaleswarar  , Kamalambal, Vatapi Ganapathi  etc,There are also Navagraha prathishtai  in the temple   and  unlike all  temples   all  planets  are in a straight line. Lord DAkshinamurthy in this temple is seen with six disciples   instead of the usual  four   disciples in other temples
A special feature of the Kamalambal temple is the existence   of a stone called Akshara Peetam   where the formless Akshara Devi is supposed to reside.Kamalambal   is seen sitting in a   very stylish posture   of putting one leg over the other. The mother is seen to wear a crescent moon jewel  and represents  goddesses   Saraswathi, Parvathi and  Lakshmi .She holds   a flower in a right hand  and is seen keeping her left hand on her hip. There are several Mantapas and halls in this temple   which includes a thousand pillared hall.
The temple worship is done 6 times a day viz Ushathkalam at 5:30 a.m., Kalasanthi at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 10:00 a.m., Sayarakshai at 5:00 p.m., Irandamkalam at 7:00 p.m. and Ardha Jamam at 8:00 p.m. Each time there is Abhishekam, Alangaram   , Naivedhyam and  Deepa aradhanai.  The temple is open   from 5 Am to 12 noon   and from 4 PM to 9 PM The Telephone numbers  of the temple  are +91- 4366 - 242 343, +91- 94433 54302 and address   of the office is  Executive Officer, Arulmigu ThiyagarajaSwamy Temple Thiruvarur – 610001 Tamilnadu - India
